Kid Stuff
“Exposure to music during early childhood has a tremendous impact on musical development. A playful musical environment in the early years lays a strong foundation for a lifelong love of, and active participation in music.” -Barbara Lysenko, Orff Echo, Spring 2007

Music development begins long before children enter the school environment.
Our Rhythm Play Times encourages children to discover themselves as musicians, develop the love of making music, and delight in their ability to make music with others.

When I am in a room with children and musical instruments, I see a magic, even more than the music, happen. Children learn to listen and share. The do not share an adult’s concern for the ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to play. They experiment, discover, listen, watch others, create, rest, wonder-what-will-happen-if-they-do-this…. you know, play. They take turns experimenting with leadership and support roles. They combine and reduce instrument groupings to express their voices that moment, in that situation. In this environment, music is never static or redundant, but creative and dynamic. Created in and for the moment!
This is a great introduction to the love affair of music. The most important quality needed, before formal music education begins, is the love of playing music.

BabyBeat! musical playtime for wee’uns new- to 5-year olds
Tuesdays. 5:15 – 6:00pm.
Play together. Learn together. Make music together! Students practice cooperative teamwork, focus, listening, sharing, respect, and create music in the process! Structure. Technique. Songs. Cooperation. Leadership. Fun. Music. Music. Music….
Benefits:
1. Listening Skills – This is a group activity, in which all members participate in cooperation with others. The art form requires that musicians learn to listen carefully and respond to both themselves and others, thus building a sophisticated set of listening skills.
2. Patience and Discipline – Music comes naturally. Playing music with others – playing WELL with others requires encouragement and support that will give kids the incentive to practice.
3. Cooperation and Group Activities – Throughout their lives, people are required to work in groups, cooperating with one another to achieve a common goal. Participating in these classes give students opportunities to practice developing the skills necessary for “working and playing well with others”
4. Communication Skills – Music is conversational and depends upon clear communication. Making a song with a drum is well suited to the task of teaching students how to communicate effectively and respond appropriately.
5. Drumming is accessible to every age, every ability, everyone. Because kids can do it “right” the first time, it is fun right off the bat. We’re in the smile business….!
As a group, we have a common goal, but each student will learn, participate and advance at their own level. Our teaching focuses on the child; not the curriculum.
